Pawtucket School Children Learn Piano

Our piano program has ended for this last quarter and I must say that the children were very good students.  I was amazed at how fast they learned the songs.  I had twenty-six children in all from ages eight to eleven.  Some of the children had experience in playing other instruments.  two or three had pianos at home.  Most of the students did not have a piano to practice on outside of the class.  This was the beginning of the piano program at the schools.

The students attended the Cunningham School and the Nathanael Greene Schools, both elementary schools in Pawtucket, RI.  Neither of these schools has much in the way of a music program and so the students were very eager to learn how to play piano.  I was interested in the Pawtucket area because of the number of speakers of other languages in their households.  It is quite a diverse community which I felt would be a challenge to teach, considering the diversities of cultures.

They began with songs that they already knew, to help them gain confidence in hearing themselves play a song which they already knew.  Their enthusiasm showed me they were enjoying the classes.   I always begin with a brief discussion on the major music theory points pertaining to the songs.  As with any class, all students learned at their own pace.

I have been teaching these classes in other programs for thirteen years and it never ceases to amaze me that students tend to learn to play the keyboard quicker in a classroom than on their own.  They tend to share their knowledge and insights with each other.  Each makes their own observations and is willing to share.  I encourage them to support each other in class as well.  The students who are struggling learn much from the students who excel.

One - on - one instruction is very valuable for the students to practice and perfect their skills.  The children took advantage of their time alone to work on the skills and process the insights they had learned from others in the class.

The students were grouped by grades.  Unfortunately, one school had keyboards while my youngest students did not.  However, the youngest students learned more music theory than the others.  All students, were eager to learn.  Some needed more time to process the lessons, but all in all, they were very enthusiastic students.

I am planning on acquiring keyboards for the one class that did not have them and perhaps replace the ones which were damaged and worn and continuing with more advanced lessons on theory.  The students were beginning to learn how to use the left hand in playing songs with both hands.  They were also beginning to play songs that they never heard before.  At the end of the year they were gaining confidence and I was beginning to see how disciplined some of the children were compared to when they began the program with me.

I am honoring the students at a Spring Gala next month to be held at Old Slater Mills in Pawtucket, RI  If any businesses are interested in sponsoring this event, please visit my website.

Help Me to Fulfill a Dream

I have been teaching piano for over thirteen years and I am finally going to have the opportunity to open a school.  I have always wanted to have my own business and I can finally work out of one location, rather than having to travel all over the state to teach!

I am aware that music students increase their reading and math skills, score better on standardized tests, become better organized, and strive to complete tasks to perfection when they learn how to play an instrument.  These skills will help them when they finally land a job!

Out of my desire to help these children, I have started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to purchase pianos and guitars for each of the locations where I am opening schools.  I need ten pianos in each location.  This way I can reach out to students all over the state who have a desire to learn how to play piano.  My first program begins in April.

I will be teaching beginner piano to children ages six and up.  I will have assistance as I will not be able to be in all places all the time.  It will be a great opportunity to enrich the children.   Please take a look at my GoFundMe campaign and make a donation.  Not only will you help me with startup funding,  but you would be fulfilling another child's dream.

Are You an Entrepreneur?

You may be surprised to know that only 13% of people actually want to be wealthy, while 90% of the people only want to get by?  Many people say that Americans are money hungry, but not according to the Pew Research Center Social and Demographic Trends.  Only 13% of adults say it’s “very important” for them to be wealthy, ranking this personal priority far behind six others measured in a new survey by the Pew Research Center Social & Demographic Trends project.

While the majority of Americans wouldn’t mind being rich, they do not have the desire to do the work in order to become rich.  According to the survey, another 43% of adults say being wealthy is “somewhat important” to them, while about the same proportion say it’s “not too important” (33%) or “not important at all” (10%).  It takes a tremendous amount of work to become wealthy and most people are not willing to do the work.  These may be the people who prefer, like Solomon, to be able to rule over the people.    2 Chronicles 1:11 says, “And God said to Solomon, this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth or honor, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life.”

However, “A new study on entrepreneurship, finds that "27 million working-age Americans--nearly 14 percent--are starting or running new businesses, which is record high for this study, which began 16 years ago.”

When we study millionaires, it is consistently found that 80 to 86% are self- made. That also applies to Dec millionaires. In 1982 according to Forbes about 38% of America's wealthiest people were self- made. In 2012, the percentage jumped to 70%.  May 6, 2014.

Amazingly, the richest 1% of the people in the Unites States own about 38% of all privately held wealth in the United States, which is more than the other 90% own.  The 90% at the bottom of society own 73% of all debt. Ecclesiates5:19 says, “Every man to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labor; this is the gift of God.”

People like to emigrate to the United States because of the opportunities for them to become financially secure.  Most come here because they are factory workers. They find jobs in the factories and stay in those jobs for life, unless they are displaced because the companies move out of the U.S.  A very high proportion of them open their own businesses and become very prosperous.  It is very interesting that we live in a land of opportunity, but few of the people who live here want to take advantage of those opportunities.  Galatians 6:10 says, As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all them who are of the household of faith.”  They just want enough money to spend on the things they need and to entertain themselves after a hard day at work.  They are not willing to expend the time and effort needed to do the work of becoming wealthy.

The only way for people to become wealthy is if they inherit it or if they become entrepreneurs.  Entrepreneurship is for people who have great ideas to help the economy, and at the same time, become wealthy in doing so.  Romans 12:10 says, “Be kind, affectioned one to another with brotherly love, in honor preferring one another;  Not slothful in business, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.”

Entrepreneurship gives people the means to be flexible with their time, to make as much money as they want, and to help as many people as they want by creating jobs and a more prosperous community.  They reduce the dependence on obsolete systems and create a better quality of life for us.  Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew the; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”

Additionally, the business owners help develop the communities.  They also provide financial support to charitable organizations.  A very small percentage of people desire to have their own business, but they transform lives with their business ideas in a very powerful way.

I am offering a workshop this weekend entitled "Learn How to Play Chords" on Skype - an intensive five hour workshop to help you master playing the piano quickly.  Lean to play praise and worship songs.  Register in the right side-bar of this blog.  Hope to see you, then!
